Why Courts Fail in North Texas, and What Actually Fixes Them

Before anyone talks about price, the useful question is what went wrong. Court damage in DFW has three common causes, and only one of them is solved by a new surface.

Surface wear. UV exposure fades the acrylic, foot traffic polishes the texture smooth, and organic buildup dulls the finish. The slab underneath is fine. This is the textbook resurfacing job, and the result looks and plays like a new court.

Drainage failure. Water sitting on the surface degrades the acrylic from above and breeds algae that makes the court slippery. Sometimes it is a blocked channel around the pad. Sometimes the original pour was too flat. Either way, resurfacing without correcting the water problem just resets the clock on the same failure.

Slab movement. Blackland Prairie clay swells and contracts with seasonal moisture, and a slab poured with rebar rather than post-tensioning has nothing holding it together against that force. It splits, and the two sides of the crack often end up at different heights. New acrylic over a slab that is still moving cracks again within a season or two.

We flood the court to map low spots, trace the crack pattern to see whether it follows soil movement or surface stress, and check the edges and drainage path. Then you get a straight answer, including when that answer is that a resurface would be wasting your money.

Common Problems We Solve

Cracks that keep coming back

A crack filled with caulk or patching compound telegraphs straight back through a new surface, usually within months. We use an ARMOR crack repair membrane, a fibreglass or carbon-fibre reinforced system that bridges the split and absorbs continued minor movement instead of fighting it.

Puddles that never dry

We flood the court, mark every low spot, then screed birdbath leveling compound until nothing holds water deeper than a nickel laid flat. That nickel test is the industry standard and it is something you can check yourself after we finish.

A surface that has gone slick

Texture is what keeps a court safe. When the silica sand mesh grading in the original surface polishes away, the court gets slippery, especially when damp. Fresh resurfacer coats with properly graded sand restore the slip-resistant texture.

Algae, staining, and years of grime

Power washing / preventive cleaning is the cheapest maintenance there is, and it is the first step of every resurface. Stripping organic buildup back to clean substrate is what lets the new system bond properly.

What a Full Resurface Involves

We start with preparation, which is most of the job. Power washing strips algae, dirt, and loose material. Then acid etching / adhesion promoter gives the new coating something to key into, because acrylic bonded to a dirty or sealed surface will lift within a year regardless of how good the product is.

Crack repair and leveling come next. Membrane over the splits, compound in the low spots, screeded flat and left to cure.

Then the surface itself: 100% acrylic latex resurfacer coats carrying graded silica sand for texture, followed by colour coats. We work with SportMaster / Laykold / Plexipave systems, all proven products with a long track record in the Texas climate. If you want to change your colour scheme, this is the moment, and it costs nothing extra to pick something different from what you had.

Finally, line striping laid out to current regulation standards. Standards shift over time, and older courts sometimes carry markings that no longer match specification. We set them correctly rather than tracing what was there.

Resurfacing Is the Right Moment to Upgrade

Two upgrades are far cheaper done during a resurface than as standalone projects.

Cushioned acrylic (ProCushion) adds rubber-granule layers beneath the colour coats, softening the surface underfoot. If you play several times a week, or if knees and joints are a consideration, it makes a noticeable difference. Because the surface is coming off anyway, the incremental cost is much lower than retrofitting it later.

Adding pickleball to a tennis court is the other one. A standard tennis court has room for up to four pickleball courts, and adding the striping while we are already surfacing is a fraction of what it costs as its own job. We can set or cast net anchors as part of the same project.

After handover we give you a maintenance plan written in plain terms: what to sweep, how often to pressure wash, and what to keep an eye on. Courts that get that basic care routinely go closer to ten years between resurfaces than six.
