Lighting That Puts Light on the Court and Nowhere Else

In a Texas summer, an unlit court gives you about two usable hours a day: early morning, and the short window after sunset before it is too dark to see. Lighting is what turns a court you use occasionally into one you use most evenings.

The design problem is spill. Badly aimed LED sports floodlighting puts as much light into your neighbour’s bedroom as onto your baseline, and that is how court projects turn into neighbourhood disputes and HOA complaints.

We specify dark-sky compliant luminaires with forward-throw optical distribution, which means the optics push light down and forward onto the playing surface rather than scattering it sideways and up. Mounted on galvanized steel lighting poles set in engineered concrete footings, the design target is zero footcandles at the property line.

That is not a claim we make on paper and leave. We produce a photometric plan before installation, showing light levels across the court and at the boundary, and after the fixtures go up we come back at night, run them, and adjust the aiming against what we actually see.

The photometric plan is also what gets your lighting through HOA review. Committees reject applications that arrive with a product brochure and a promise. They approve ones that show them numbers.

Common Problems We Solve

Fences that come down in a storm

Solid windscreen mesh catches wind like a sail, and North Texas gust fronts are not gentle. HDPE windscreens with blowout vents relieve the pressure through the fabric rather than transferring it into the posts. It is a small specification difference that saves a fence replacement.

Balls in the neighbour’s yard

On a sloped lot or a tight boundary, a standard fence height is not enough. Rather than raising the whole enclosure, we add taller ball-stop sections or high-impact ball containment netting on the runs where balls actually escape.

Pickleball noise complaints

Paddle strike is sharp and high-frequency, and it carries much further than people expect. Acoustic barrier fabric on the fence runs facing the nearest homes absorbs it rather than reflecting it, and orienting the court so strike direction points away from neighbours costs nothing if it is planned at design stage.

Fencing an HOA will not approve

Estate communities in Southlake, Colleyville, and Prosper rarely pass basic galvanised chain-link. We build with vinyl-coated wire fabric, ornamental iron, vinyl, and aluminium, and we know which of those each type of committee expects.

Choosing the Right Fence for Your Court

Fence height is driven by the sport. Tennis needs ten feet because lobs carry. Pickleball and basketball generally work at eight, sometimes lower on a flat lot with generous surround. The honest answer depends on your lot, and we will not sell you more fence than the court needs.

Material is driven by your community. Chain-link with a vinyl coating in black or dark bronze is the most economical option and disappears visually far better than raw galvanised. Ornamental iron reads as landscaping rather than sports infrastructure and is what most estate ACCs prefer. Vinyl needs no maintenance and suits families who would rather not think about it again. Aluminium sits in between on both cost and appearance.

Colour matters more than people expect. A dark fence against planting recedes; a silver one dominates the yard. We pick fence colour alongside your court surface scheme during 3D design so the whole thing reads as one considered installation.

Why It Is Cheaper Installed With the Court

Every part of this work involves the ground being open. Conduit for lighting, footings for poles, footings for fence posts, and any drainage adjustments all happen far more cheaply while excavation equipment is already on site and the slab has not been poured.

Retrofitting lighting to a finished court means trenching around a slab you just paid for, working around finished landscaping, and protecting a new acrylic surface from equipment traffic. It is entirely doable, and we do it regularly, but it costs meaningfully more.

If you are undecided about lighting during a new build, the cheapest hedge is to run the conduit and set the pole footings now, then add the luminaires whenever you are ready. The rough-in is a small part of the total, and it removes the expensive part of the decision from future you.
